Re: Manual Bilge Pump Outlet

High on the freeboard or under the counter should work. Probably want a high loop or vented loop on either, tho, to prevent a siphon from starting. PO plumbed a nylon thru hull under the port side sheer. Might re-use it, tho the hose routing must have cut down his pump output by at least half. So we...

Re: Fresh Air Inlet.

Either the Origo or the Cookmate clone of same. Boat came with a non-gimballed Kenyon pressure alcohol stove, tho an old Origo fire pan lurked beneath it. We were originally thinking propane, just for the convenience -- but the infrastructure required to do it to ABYC standards ruled that out. Locke...

Re: Fresh Air Inlet.

That cowl should work very well. It also looks tougher than louvered vents. Ours is missing several fins -- it's down where feet might kick it. Some previous owner chose that nasty white vinyl accordion hose for all our ductwork, all shredded or collapsed by now. It does look rather like something f...

Re: Fresh Air Inlet.

Ours has a plastic louver over the blower intake (outlet?), something like this: http://www.mflouver.com//App_Themes/mflouver/images/plw100.jpg http://www.mflouver.com/round_plastic_louvers.html I haven't yet figured out what all the ductwork goes to. There is a surprising amount of it. Presumably t...

Re: Rebuilding rudder and hatch lids

Ooh, nice work, Peter. What did you use to create a watertight seal where the shaft enters and exits the blade? That seems to be the source point for most leaks. I am currently leaning toward G/Flex or similar flexible epoxy, maybe leaving a little recess for some 3M 5200 polyurethane on top of that...

Rebuilding rudder and hatch lids

Since it is winter now and we are too wiped out from the purchase to pursue big projects, we want to start with smaller, indoor stuff. First up is the rudder. It was full of water, which was starting to push out thru the laminate & cause blisters. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8063/8234362966_19...

Re: Tiller pilot

We have the TP10 for our SJ21 and like it. I would advise stepping up to the TP22 for the Ballad. Max boat size for the TP10 is 8800#, which is close to a Ballad in full cruising trim. The TP22 will handle boats up to 11,000lbs. Many experts advise stepping up one size on things like roller furlers ...

Re: Main sail

http://www.balladklubben.se/balladexchange/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3393 Scroll down for the discussion of modified sailplans. I find a Code Zero & Gennaker/spinnaker combination covers the light air range of a 150% G1, while a full-hoist G2 would exhibit better shape and control in higher winds....

Re: Storm jib

Dat's a tiny storm jib.;) Tho you are right, it's probably better than the Ballad's original 150sqft inner staysail in true storm conditions -- if it has enough drive to keep the boat tracking downwind or forereaching off a lee shore. One of the findings of the 1979 Fastnet inquiry was that most IOR...

Re: Main sail

 You are a man after my own heart, Miguel. See my initial post under 'Introductions,' where we discussed this possibility a little. Back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest a smaller headsail (like your roller-furling G2) and a larger main would not unbalance the helm at all. While no Ballad s...
