Re: Anchor rode...

Yeah, not sure why Rocna advises such large chain. One chart I saw suggests 5/16" (8mm) G4 Hi Test chain for the Rocna 15kg; you could really get away with 1/4" (6-7mm). This other chart from Rocna suggests 1/4" is adequate for 30' boats weighing up to 5000kg: http://www.rocna.com/pro...

Re: Anchor rode...

Hi, Mark. What sort of bottom & depths are you normally anchoring in? Is there a reason (like coral) you need all chain rode? Are you using a power windlass? & what size Grade 40 (G4) chain are you planning? One nice thing about the new anchor designs is how quickly & deeply they dig in ...

Re: Sprayhood!

Neat. Have to love a workspace where you can bolt things to the floor. :D People ask why my workbench is cheap, ugly MDF rather than fine laminated hard maple. "So I can screw stuff to it, silly." I've been eyeballing this Harbor Freight tubing roller, since we have quite a lot of metal fo...

Re: Sprayhood!

How'd you bend the frames? We're already committed to 1"SS, tho thick vs. thin wall hasn't been decided. Did you home-build a bending jig, or use a dedicated tubing roller? We'd like to match the Ballad's lovely coaming arch, but beyond that we're still puzzling over designs. We'll probably nee...

Interesting deck core technique

I had assumed the Ballad's foam core (Divinycell, correct?) was simply laid into the deck snadwich as sheets or blocks, with the inner skin being laid up over it. Apparently not. It looks like the inner skin was suspended from the outer via small twists of glass fiber in a grid pattern, and the foam...

Re: Head Choices

... my experiences with Jabsco manual toilets has not been too good. Can't tell if understatement or general consensus. Their reputation is poor, for sure. Could be the design, or maybe there's just so many out there. A toilet is something that has to work every time, tho. Or you will hate it...

Re: Traveller Car

What do you do when the apparent is up at 21 - 22 knots? Move the traveler way to leeward? Doesn't this impede how high you can point if the boom is moved far from the centreline? MarK: As I understand it (and I've never owned a boat with a traveler, so this is taken from various sources), lowering...

Re: Cooktop choices

Yeah -- where your engine intake inlet is, we have a larger (either 1" or 1.5") sink drain thru-hull. Our galley seawater intake is presently under the stove; that has to move. Our raw water cooling inlet is down on the keel, in the aftmost bilge compartment. Both head thru-hulls are going...
