Traveller re-model

I'm investigating a traveller upgrade. The one I have is ... to say the least ... unsatisfactory. It gets in the way of seat cushions and is a bear to operate.

Searching the Internet I came across a picture of a Hallberg-Rassy 29 traveller and had an "aha" moment.

If I shorten mine and drop it down so it's level with the bridge deck, and fits from side to side of the foot-well, I think I'd have a lot better setup.
I know shortening it would reduce function a bit, but usually the car is either centered or slightly off to one side or the other. When running, I clip the end of the main-sheet to the base of the stanchion to keep the sheets from rubbing on the lifelines.
I'd "butcher" the existing unit as a trial, and if it works, replace it with a new track and car. I'm thinking of a simpler setup with a pin-to-hole car retaining system rather than the ropes and pulleys I have now ... more cruising-like than racing-like.
The only downside I can see is that I may shield my engine panel a bit. Any thoughts?
